PRO BONO VETERANS CLINIC AT THE MARTIN COUNTY VETERANS SERVICES OFFICE
Florida Rural Legal Services, Inc. (FRLS) and the Martin County Bar Association Pro Bono Committee are providing free civil legal assistance to low-income and indigent veterans at the Martin County Veterans Services Office in Stuart. The office is located at 435 SE Flagler Ave., Stuart, FL 34994. The clinic is open to assist Veterans on the first and Third Thursday of each month from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Members of the MCBA will be available to triage the legal issues of veterans in all civil legal areas. The attorneys will provide limited advice, assistance with completing forms, and refer cases back to FRLS and the MCBA Pro Bono Committee for further legal services where warranted. Services will not be provided in criminal matters. If any criminal defense attorney would like to be placed on the Veterans Clinic Criminal Defense Attorney Reduced Fee Referral List please contact Carolyn Fabrizio at FRLS.
According to the Florida Department of Veterans Affairs (FDVA) there are approximately 15,000 Veterans living in Martin County. There are many issues affecting veterans. Income, housing, education, employment, family matters, discharge status, and personal safety all play a significant role in the health and welfare of Veterans. Providing holistic services to Veterans is very important. Many times when a Veteran is discharged from active duty, he or she may not petition the court to modify an existing child support order. Child Support will continue to accrue at the higher rate of pay. The Veteran may end up with a Driver License suspension due to past due child support. This then affects his or her ability to work, participate in carpooling with his or her child, make rent or mortgage payments, etc. Having attorneys who are specifically trained to understand the unique needs of Veterans is important.
Florida Rural Legal Services, Inc. (FRLS) and the MCBA Pro Bono Committee will provide training to any interested volunteer. If you are interested in volunteering for the Veterans Clinic or you are willing to accept cases for full representation when needed, please contact: Jane Cornett firstname.lastname@example.org, Maxine Noel email@example.com, or Carolyn Fabrizio firstname.lastname@example.org.
